Mondo is one of Estonia\u2019s leading humanitarian and development cooperation organisations, that\u00a0 has been working in Ukraine since 2014, responding to urgent humanitarian needs, and also to strengthening resilience, dignity of vulnerable people, and long-term recovery capacity.<\/h4>\n

Prior to the Russian Federation\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine Mondo implemented development cooperation and humanitarian assistance programmes in Eastern Ukraine, particularly in Luhansk oblast. Our primary focus areas included education, digital competencies, and democratic development.<\/p>\n

Since the full-scale invasion, Mondo has responded to Ukraine\u2019s most urgent humanitarian needs where they are greatest. We support education in emergencies, with more than 200 schools benefiting from our programmes; provide winterisation support to the most vulnerable; deliver mental health and psychosocial support; and implement economic resilience programmes for internally displaced people and women. In the past four years, more than half a million people have benefited from Mondo\u2019s work in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Mondo\u2019s work is part of Estonia’s official assistance as we are strategic partner in humanitarian aid for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and a long time implementing partner in development programs. We work in close cooperation with Estonian counterparts such as MFA, ESTDEV, Environmental Investment Center (KIK) as well as Ukrainian partners, local authorities, and international donors and frameworks, including OCHA coordination mechanisms, European Commission, GIZ.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”42287″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Winterization Support and Safe Living Conditions<\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Winter remains one of the most severe humanitarian challenges, particularly for IDPs, elderly persons, people with disabilities, women, and children in frontline and high-risk regions. With our multiple programs Mondo has supported these segments of population and areas throughout the full-scale war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mondo has supported 90 accommodation centers for IDPs in Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts with winter provision of winter repairs, heating systems and solid fuel. In addition, Mondo has renovated 2 centers for IDPs and two schools and supported with winterization aid and renovations close to 200 homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through installment of 3 mobile crisis centres in collaboration with NGO Dobrobat, Mondo supported vulnerable people in Kyiv\u2019s apartment buildings affected by the extreme winter cold in 2025\/2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mondo has delivered around 200 generators (with capacities ranging from 2 to 18 kW) to hospitals, schools, regional shelters, and evacuation hubs to help mitigate the impact of power outages and ensured that essential services could continue operating during critical moments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Between February – May 2022 we delivered 350 tons of food aid to Ukraine and locally procured 5,500 food parcels, covering the daily nutritional needs of approximately 350,000 people. Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)<\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The psychological impact of war remains one of the most serious and long-term consequences of the war. People in Ukraine need MHPSS support now and during the years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2022 with the funding from private Estonian donations, ESTDEV and OCHA-UHF we have continued providing mental health support, supporting over 15 000 Ukrainians with psychiatric and psychological consultations. These services help individuals cope with trauma, anxiety, grief, and prolonged stress caused by the war. We are committed to continue this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Special attention has been on children\u2019s mental health, which we have supported through continued work with Ukrainian general education schools and school psychologists. We have provided MHPSS trainings for teachers, special trainings for school psychologists and equipped their cabinets with useful and modern tools needed for their work to be effective and inclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through the DocuMental platform, Mondo has provided over 9,000 psychiatric and psychological consultations with an online diagnostics system. Education Continuity and Support for Schools<\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]War disrupts education, threatens intellectual capital, and places heavy stress on teachers and students alike. Mondo has supported Ukraine\u2019s education system since 2014 and our activities in the sector have grown in scale. Currently Mondo has 161 general education schools and 45 Vocational Education and Training (VET) schools in our network.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since February 2022, we have organized Digital Competencies and MHPSS trainings for over 6,000 education workers – school management, teachers and school psychologists from most of the oblasts in Ukraine. Out of these, 450 are teachers and school management representatives from VET schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025 we have focused on the development of educational technology capacity to enhance the sustainability of modern and inclusive education in Ukraine, including in the VET sector, through developing an Educational Technology curriculum together with partners.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the summer of 2024 Mondo began the \u201cEasy Camp\u201d educational summer camps, a unique and effective model for students from front-line oblasts and veteran families, that addresses learning loss while also providing psychosocial support. Mondo activities in Ukraine before the full-scale war<\/h2>\n

Education<\/h4>\n

  • Mondo initiated an educational school network in Luhansk oblast and prior to the full-scale war was cooperating with 40 schools in the crisis region (25% of all schools). We have a human rights themed educational program directed specifically to the crisis area of eastern Ukraine. More than 1000 teachers and 12 000 pupils were benefiting from human rights and global education activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Mondo has supported educational facilities in Ukraine in order to help schools create an environment that supports catch-up learning, use modern educational tools and integrate global topics into school lessons.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Our educational projects in Ukraine actively engage Estonian teachers. Mondo has organized study visits to Estonia for Ukrainian education workers during which we introduced the Estonian education system and visited Estonian schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • In collaboration with our partners, Mondo has organized many educational events in Ukraine. With the help of Estonian experts, we organized an ethics, values and corruption themed workshop in Kiev for eastern Ukrainian school principals. Since 2016, we have been organizing teacher\u2019s training and conferences on human rights and SDGs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • During quarantine, we offered a distance learning themed web-seminar series to over 3000 Ukrainian education workers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • We have provided schools in our education network with equipment for different subjects and ICT, equipment for active breaks (games, sports gear, badminton, etc) and disinfectants. To support distance learning, we provided 30 schools with projectors and audio systems which improved the schools\u2019 ability to teach during COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Digital competencies for teachers<\/h4>\n

    • In 2021, Mondo piloted the Digital Competencies Training for teachers in the Ukrainian crisis areas. Local trainers completed the training and were scheduled to train teachers in their schools. However, due to the full-scale war, the training of teachers is now happening online instead.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Mondo has been facilitating seminars and webinars for Ukraine\u2019s educational workers, in order to support distance learning and e-teaching skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Healthcare<\/h4>\n

      • Since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine in 2014, Mondo has been supporting more than 50 medical facilities in the Luhansk region with consumables and medical equipment and offered psychosocial support activities in eastern Ukraine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Food security and livelihoods<\/h4>\n
          \n
        • Since 2014, Mondo has been offering humanitarian aid in Ukraine. In the early years of the conflict, we provided food aid and support to local hospitals.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • In 2020, eastern Ukraine was struck by large-scale forest fires which destroyed hundreds of homes. Through Mondo\u2019s Crisis Fund, our partner Vostok SOS received 2000\u20ac for the support of families who lost their homes. Thanks to the donated money, five families were provided with home rebuilding materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Democratic development<\/h4>\n

          • On Mondo\u2019s initiative, a new tradition of Opinion Festivals started in Severodonetsk in 2016. The opinion festival is a platform to raise a variety of topics relevant to democratic development of the society. The Opinion Festival in Severodonetsk took place every year in the beginning of September.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
