Mondo started its work in Syria in 2018 by supporting young people with digital skills training and humanitarian aid as needed.<\/h4>\n

Digital skills to reduce inequality<\/h4>\n

Mondo started supporting Syria in 2018, when we offered digital skills courses for internally displaced persons and rural youth. The studies were based on the Mondo digital competences program developed in cooperation with Tallinn University, i.e. Mondo DigiSkills Academy.
\nThe first course was completed by 24 10th\u201311th grade youth in the city of Latakia in western Syria. The participants had moved to Latakia from other, less safe Syrian cities or came from surrounding villages where young people have difficult access to the internet and computer studies. More than half of the students were girls, because Syrian girls have less access to information technology compared to boys. The classes were taught by Syrian students whom Mondo trained together with a team of Estonian experts in 2018.<\/p>\n

Humanitarian aid for earthquake victims<\/h4>\n

In February 2023, Turkey and Syria were hit by earthquakes, the devastation of which further complicated the situation in Syria, where a civil war has been ongoing since 2011 and 90% of the population lives below the official poverty line. As a result of the earthquakes, nearly 6,000 people lost their lives in Syria.
\nMondo distributed humanitarian aid in Syria together with its long-term partner Finn Church Aid, which has a local team and is therefore able to help victims quickly and effectively. 63 families who lost their homes, i.e. 350 people in the city of Aleppo, received essential mattresses and blankets with the support of Estonian donors.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”50020″ add_caption=”yes” img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]16-year-old Diana Alkasha is an 11th grade student from Syria who graduated from the Mondo digital skills program. The organisation helps increase women’s independent coping and income generation by offering skills training, including digital skills.
