But it can also be a story of being left out, of being stranded on the other side of the digital gap. We want to change that.<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>NGO Mondo&#8217;s Digital Competencies Training gives refugee youth, teachers and vulnerable communities the skills and tools needed to actively participate in society.<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=&#8221;top&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1614618970710{margin-bottom: -40px !important;padding-top: 80px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}&#8221; el_class=&#8221;white text segment-intro&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1609838352319{padding-top: 1rem !important;padding-bottom: 1rem !important;}&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;27256&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mondo\u2019s Digital Competencies Training (DCT) is about digital literacy and computer skills, but it&#8217;s also about using digital devices and the Internet proactively as a tool to engage with society on a professional, educational and personal level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While also encompassing the basics of device usage, the program puts a special emphasis on <strong>safety<\/strong> and <strong>problem-solving<\/strong>. To further the impact, <strong>smartphones<\/strong> are central to the program \u2013 as the participants are most likely to own a smartphone as their first digital device, the training provides them with relevant and easily applicable everyday skills.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mondo&#8217;s DCT is based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/jrc\/en\/digcomp\">DigComp<\/a> framework and has been developed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalprinciples.org\/\">Principles for Digital Development<\/a> in mind. The structure of the training is based on the five key aspects of the European Commission&#8217;s DigComp framework: information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, safety, and problem-solving. We have been training <strong>refugee youth<\/strong> in <strong>Uganda<\/strong> since 2019 and refugees in <strong>Jordan<\/strong> and disadvantaged youth in <strong>Syria<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021 Digital Competencies Training was expanded to <strong>teachers<\/strong> in <strong>Uganda<\/strong> and <strong>Kenya<\/strong>, and to <strong>refugee women<\/strong> in\u00a0<strong>Kenya<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have adjusted the training both to a <strong>beginner level<\/strong> and <strong>mid-level<\/strong> audience and in each location, the training is adjusted to the local context and beneficiary base-level skills. I started a non-profit organisation Inspiring Today that works with young men like me, mostly refugees, to empower their lives in different aspects through motivational speeches. I asked myself: \u201cWhy can\u2019t I bring it online?\u201d. Mondo taught me those skills. Though I don\u2019t have a computer, I can use my phone to reach many. On the other hand, it has helped me to market my products on WhatsApp, Facebook and associate with other people on social media. It has also helped me to get more exposed. The most useful skills I learnt from the Mondo Digital Competencies Training were about creating a strong password for my social media accounts, how to set up a Google account and use different Google tools. After completing the Mondo Digital Competencies Training, my friends and I started a marketing company called E-MAX. We brought together people who help kick-start start-ups and inspire entrepreneurs through hackathons with people who work with teachers and digitalisation in public education. The collaboration between <strong>digital entrepreneurs<\/strong> and providers of <strong>public services<\/strong> has been one of the key components in <strong>Estonia&#8217;s success<\/strong> globally. Our aim is to bring Estonian digital success to Mondo&#8217;s humanitarian aid programmes as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite its small size,<strong> Estonia is a digital society<\/strong> where many ground-breaking start-ups originate from. Estonian basic education is number one in Europe and among the best in the entire world. Digitalisation has simplified a lot in Estonia \u2013 it is normal for Estonians to use online services to report their taxes in 3 minutes or register a new business in 15 minutes. The data connection prices in Eastern Africa are times higher than those in Estonia and become one of the major challenges for digital competencies trainings. It costs around 180 euros to enable an Internet connection for 40 learners to pass Mondo DCT.
