Once known as the Switzerland of the Middle East, today over 80% of Lebanon’s population lives below the official poverty line. Years of political instability, inept governance, and corruption led to a colossal debt burden in the country following the end of the civil war in 1990. New loans were used to repay old ones, until eventually it became unsustainable, writes Mondo’s Middle-East Project Manager Elisabeth Viinalass.
