PROJECTS

Building the self-reliance of Syrian refugee women in Lebanon

Project period: April 2025 – August 2025

Project donor: Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, private donations

Project partners: DPNA, Red Oak

Project budget: 28 000€

Lebanon remains in the most severe crisis of its recent history, five years after the onset of the economic and financial crisis and thirteen years after the outbreak of the Syrian crisis. This situation was further exacerbated by the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023, which intensified in September 2024 and affected not only the southern and eastern parts of the country but also several other regions.

In early December 2024, Bashar Al-Assad was overthrown in Syria. In addition to the current unpredictable security situation, the country is suffering from a liquidity crisis. A large number of residential buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged, job opportunities are scarce, and access to basic services—such as electricity, water, heating, building repairs, as well as healthcare and education—is limited.

The main objective of the project is to support the economic self-sufficiency of vulnerable women in Lebanon through short-term skills training and entrepreneurship support. Seventy percent of the project’s direct beneficiaries are Syrians, who, after participating in the project’s activities, will have the opportunity to earn a livelihood either in Lebanon or in Syria, should they choose to return. The number of direct beneficiaries in the skills training is 55 women, with a total of 113 people directly benefiting from the project.

The project is implemented in partnership with local organisations Development for People and Nature Association (DPNA) and Red Oak in the south of Lebanon, in the city of Saida, and in the east of Lebanon, in the Bekaa region.
