Mondo improves the living and shelter conditions of people displaced by the war in Ukraine through solar-powered ventilation systems.
The full-scale war has forced 3.66 million people into internal displacement in Ukraine. Shelters and accommodation centers, however, are overcrowded and not designed for long-term accommodation. These facilities often lack adequate heating, suffer from poor air quality, and face unstable electricity supply. Excess moisture caused by overcrowding damages furniture and buildings, leading to mold and, in turn, allergies, breathing difficulties, and other health problems.
Through this project, Mondo and its partners are enhancing the living conditions of displaced people in shelters, schools, and accommodation centers in Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia and Harkiv oblasts. A total of 38 solar-powered ventilation systems will be installed in selected buildings to ensure energy-efficient, off-grid air exchange and additional heating where needed. By introducing solar-powered systems, we strengthen infrastructure resilience in times of crisis and contribute to rebuilding Ukraine in a more environmentally sustainable way, helping to reduce carbon emissions. This goal is further supported by environmental trainings for local communities.
