Practical course for journalists on development cooperation and humanitarian aid

Project period: April 2025 – December 2025

Project donor: ESTDEV – Estonian Centre for International Development

Project partners: Arengukoostöö Ümarlaud, Tartu Ülikool

Project budget: 50 291€

The practical course provides journalism students at the University of Tartu with the knowledge and skills needed to cover topics related to development cooperation and humanitarian aid in a diverse and culturally sensitive manner.

Over the course of one week, students will learn about solutions-oriented approaches and practical techniques. Lectures and workshops are delivered by a range of field specialists and practicing journalists, who highlight Estonia’s contribution to addressing global challenges. During the course, students will produce journalistic pieces as group work with the support of mentors; these will be published in Estonian media outlets.

The course is organised by Mondo and the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Tartu and takes place within the project “Public awareness raising on development cooperation and humanitarian aid through data-based media outreach and a practical journalism course”, implemented by the Estonian Roundtable for Development Cooperation and funded by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV). The course will take place in November 2025 as part of the bachelor’s-level course “Advanced Professional Skills”.
