Culturally responsive teaching in Tallinn schools

Project duration: March 2026 – December 2026

Project funder: Tallinn City Government

Project budget: 37 450€

Mondo Maailmakool helps enhance the competencies of teachers in Tallinn schools and kindergartens for teaching in a multicultural classroom.

Estonian schools have rapidly become more linguistically and culturally diverse, and teachers increasingly need skills to work in a multicultural classroom. Research by the Institute of Baltic Studies indicates that the readiness of Estonian schools to support newly arrived immigrant students is very uneven, and teachers need more systematic support, knowledge, and practical tools.

The proportion of students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds is growing rapidly in Tallinn schools, which is why teachers need support in adapting the learning process to the diverse needs of learners. Through the culturally responsive teaching training program, Mondo also supports the transition to Estonian-language education by offering teachers practical tools for teaching students with varying language skills, cultural backgrounds, previous learning experiences, and sense of belonging.

Mondo will develope a culturally responsive teaching training program, practical study materials, and methodological tools. Through practical training sessions, Mondo will pass on this knowledge and increase teachers’ readiness and capacity to work in a multicultural classroom. The program is being developed by Mondo Maailmakool in cooperation with teachers from Tallinn schools and researchers from the University of Tartu and Tallinn University.
