An important aspect of global education is supporting young people in becoming active citizens who contribute to both local and global development. Within the framework of this citizenship education project, we are creating a practical component for the national civics curriculum.

The Estonian national civics curriculum recommends that at least one-third of the learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom. However, in many schools, teachers lack the time and accessible methodologies to implement practical activities within the subject. As a result, teaching remains too theoretical and fails to foster the development of active citizens who are interested in contributing to local community development and problem-solving. Creating a practical component for the curriculum will provide teachers with clear and simple guidelines on how to conduct hands-on learning.

With this Citizenship ED+ project we are enhancing active citizenship education among young Europeans in 4 countries. The project’s primary goals are to empower young Europeans through active citizenship, provide educators and youth workers with effective and innovative teaching methodologies and tools, and advocate for structured active citizenship education.

Key objectives include developing a comprehensive 30-hour curriculum, based on experiential learning in local communities and implementing this curriculum in 8 high schools across 4 countries, involving at least 200 students. Additionally, the project aims to develop and distribute guidelines for teaching active citizenship and launch an advocacy campaign with educational authorities.

The initiative will culminate in a final expert international conference, showcasing the achievements and community impacts realised by young participants.
