PROJECTS

Mental health support for Ukraine and catch-up learning camps to children of Zaporizka oblast

Project period: May 2024 – December 2024

Project donor: Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Project partners: East-SOS, DocuMental

Project size: 303 752 €

The war in Ukraine challenges children to keep up with their education. Data from the beginning of 2024 states that 5.3 million children and teachers require support.

Adding to the other effects of war, the closing of schools and limited access to face-to-face learning have deepened the learning gaps that emerged four years ago with the COVID-19 pandemic. These gaps are particularly evident in core subjects: Ukrainian language and literature, mathematics, and history.

Another major challenge is related to mental health. According to UNESCO, 26% of Ukrainian teenagers have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, and 75% of schoolchildren have experienced stress. UNICEF highlights that over 1.5 million children need help coping with stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

The activities of this project will support children’s learning outcomes in Zaporizka oblast, where face-to-face teaching is not possible, and provide effective and timely mental health support for Ukrainians.

To support students, we will organise catch-up learning camps for 150 7th-grade children in Zaporizka oblast. The students will focus on three main subjects: Ukrainian language and literature, mathematics, and history. To ensure the method’s sustainability, we collaborate with the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and local municipalities.

To support Ukrainians’ mental health, we offer 2,200 psychological or psychiatric online consultations through the evidence-based diagnostic and treatment platform DocuMental, developed in Estonia, which follows the guidelines of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Additionally, we provide free self-diagnostic opportunities via the same platform for an unlimited number of people.
