PROJECTS
Promoting gender equality in Armenia
Project period: September 2024 – December 2024
Project donor: ESTDEV – Estonian Centre for International Development
Projekti partnerid: Women’s Rights House
Project budget: 19 120€
In Armenia, traditional gender roles and patriarchal practices often dictate societal processes and norms, and women face significant challenges in achieving their rights. The number of women holding political positions in the country is disproportionately small compared to men, and their decision-making power is limited. Women and girls spend 21.7% of their time doing household chores, while for men, this figure is 4.4%.
Gender stereotypes are particularly deeply rooted in the Shirak region, where Mondo’s partner, the Women’s Rights House, operates. The lack of public awareness about the importance of gender equality in public discourse and politics further exacerbates the issue. The situation in the country has also been complicated by the decades-long conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which escalated in September 2023 and forced nearly all the region’s residents to leave their possessions and flee to Armenia.
Mondo’s project “Promoting Civic Engagement and Good Governance in the Shirak Region of Armenia through Raising Educators’ Awareness on Gender Equality Issues” promotes gender equality and modern, human rights-based education, focusing on the Shirak region. As part of the project, we offer teachers additional training on human rights, gender equality, bullying, and gender-based violence. Additionally, we raise public awareness of the topic and its importance.
