Environmental Justice Conference

Project period: October 2024 – June 2025

Project donor: ESTDEV – Estonian Centre for International Development

Project partner: Estonian Environmental Law Center

Project budget: 78 029€

During Mondo’s 16 years, the problem of extreme weather conditions caused by climate change in our partner communities has become increasingly concerning. For example, changes in rainfall patterns in Uganda or severe storms in Georgia have severely worsened the survival of already disadvantaged communities. Additionally, climate change-related issues affect the environment more broadly, leading to problems like erosion, biodiversity loss, access to clean water, and many others.

While the average Ugandan’s carbon footprint is 0.1 tons, for example, the average Estonian’s footprint was 78 times larger, at 7.8 tons per person in 2022. This raises an ethical and political issue in environmental changes – environmental justice. Who is responsible and bears the costs when those who suffer the most have the smallest climate footprint?

Through a conference dedicated to environmental justice and its associated pre- and post-activities, awareness of environmental and climate issues in Estonian society will increase, and networking among stakeholders will strengthen. Organising an international conference creates favourable opportunities for different target groups interested in the topic to meet and form new collaborations.
