Mondo Maailmakool helps enhance Estonian teachers’ skills in addressing sensitive global topics in schools and increases students’ participation in the learning process.
A teacher survey conducted by GLOCAL partners in Estonia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary revealed that 68% of teachers feel that the curriculum or school framework supports them in addressing global and sensitive issues only “to some extent”, while 74% of teachers highlighted the need for ready-to-use learning materials and 61% for methodological training. Only 17% of teachers rated students’ substantive participation as high, and 44% saw a need for stronger teacher-to-teacher learning communities.
The GENE 2019 peer review of global education in Estonia also highlighted the need for more systematic integration of global education and stronger support structures. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2022) shows more broadly that while developing critical thinking and civic competence is considered important, goals and practices related to students’ active participation are implemented much less systematically in education systems.
Within the framework of GLOCAL, together with partners from Estonia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Lithuania, we are developing a common framework that helps teachers conceptualize what meaningful student participation in global education means. The framework offers practical principles for guiding dialogue, considering diverse perspectives, and supporting students in addressing various sensitive global issues such as wars and conflicts, migration, climate change, and inequality.
Over the course of more than a year, we will create and test practical global education learning activities and methods suitable for different age groups, which we will refine based on feedback from teachers and experts from the Global South. A central part of the project is the development of global education study circles in five countries, enabling teachers to regularly exchange experiences and learn from one another. Mondo Maailmakool has led global education study circles in Estonia for several years. In Lithuania, the study circle model will be launched for the first time, while in other partner countries, existing study circles will be continued and further developed.
