Mondo Maailmakool strengthens Estonian school democracy and helps to develop young people’s participation skills through global education activities and youth active groups. 

In studies including youth participation, the need to increase both the number of young people participating in decision-making and their actual influence on decisions is emphasized. It is also highlighted that youth participation largely depends on the opportunities and structures created for them by adults, schools, and communities. At the same time, the development of the youth sector in both Estonia and across Europe prioritizes consistent support for young people’s civic engagement. 

Civic engagement is also an important part of global education and global citizenship. Therefore, with the support of Maailmakool, global citizen youth active groups will be established in at least five Estonian schools, giving young people the opportunity to initiate global education activities, participate in school life development, and contribute to decision-making processes affecting them.

Over 500 young people will be involved in project activities, participating in youth-led initiatives, Model UN simulations, world days, and other activities. Through all of this, young people’s argumentation, collaboration, self-expression, and participation skills will develop, along with their readiness to take part in societal discussions at both local and international levels.

Maailmakool also supports people working with youth on this topic. Over 60 educational workers will participate in networking meetings, training sessions, and co-creation processes aimed at improving schools’ ability to meaningfully engage young people and creating a school culture that supports youth participation.

The project is titled “Systemic and Network-Based Development of Youth Participation in Estonian Educational Institutions“.
