The crises of recent years, especially the full-scale war in Ukraine, have shown that the importance of civil protection and crisis preparedness is growing rapidly not only in Estonia, but throughout the Baltic region. In the event of a crisis breaking out in Estonia, domestic coordination within the UN system will be triggered, requiring coordinated action and good cooperation between government agencies and humanitarian organisations. The experience of Ukraine has also shown that the role of civil society and NGOs during the outbreak of a crisis is significant.

With the support of the National Foundation of Civil Society, Mondo will set a clear role and capacity in the field of crisis preparedness, and a network of NGOs for providing humanitarian aid has emerged in Estonia, capable of acting in a more coordinated manner in the event of a crisis.

To strengthen Mondo’s capacity, training sessions are being held within the organisation to increase the team’s knowledge mainly about crisis preparedness, crisis management, and international humanitarian standards. Parallel to the trainings, we are developing Mondo’s crisis preparedness action plan, which defines the organisation’s role and priorities in a crisis situation and creates a foundation for long-term development.

Next, we support the development of an NGO network for providing humanitarian aid in Estonia, which regularly brings together organisations interested in humanitarian aid provision and crisis preparedness topics. Together, we map preparedness, share experiences, and make agreements on how to act in a coordinated way in Estonia in the event of a crisis. The capacity of the members of the humanitarian aid network will grow through networking, training, and individual mentorship according to each organisation’s needs.

The project is titled “Increasing the capacity of NGO Mondo and other NGOs in crisis preparedness and humanitarian aid provision in Estonia”.
