Both Kenya and Uganda’s national educational directions emphasise digital learning, yet efforts to improve teachers’ digital skills in both countries do not reach a large portion of the nation. Particularly, rural areas, which are already economically disadvantaged, are left behind.

The training program developed and implemented in several countries, including Uganda, within the framework of Mondo’s digital competencies programme provides teachers with the necessary skills and confidence to use digital tools in their classrooms..

The aim of the project is to strengthen public schools in Uganda and Kenya by developing teacher education and especially their digital competencies. The project “Supporting the education system in Kenya and Uganda through enhancing the digital skills of educators in the public school system” is carried out in strong partnerships with Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports and Kenya’s Ministry of Education, in collaboration with local governments, schools, and partner organisations.

In Uganda, Mondo’s digital competencies programme will be expanded from Northern Uganda to Western Uganda, where staff at a teacher college will acquire the necessary digital skills to train future educators. In Kenya, the focus is on implementing a competency-based curriculum by expanding Mondo’s digital competency training initiatives from the Kakuma refugee camp to Western Kenya. The direct beneficiaries in Kenya and Uganda are more than 400 education specialists, including primary school teachers and students in teacher colleges.

The project will also strengthen cooperation between Estonia, Kenya, and Uganda in the fields of teacher training and digital competency development, sharing Estonia’s best practices.

By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, the project cultivates new opportunities, reinforcing the education system and advancing digital literacy across Kenya and Uganda.
