MediaACT: media literacy seminar in Estonia

Project period: February 2026 – December 2026

Project donor: Deutsche Botschaft Tallinn

Project budget: 20 000 €

In Estonia, as in much of Europe, social media has become the primary information environment for young people, profoundly shaping how they communicate, form opinions, and perceive the world. While young people are highly digitally active, they are also increasingly exposed to cross-border disinformation and manipulative online narratives. The absence of a coherent, shared understanding of how social media influence, FIMI, and global issues intersect leaves both educators and learners vulnerable.

Mondo Maailmakool supports through global education the development of medialiteracy in Estonia. Our actions strengthen the capacity of educators, education stakeholders, and youth representatives to understand, critically analyse, and respond to disinformation, social media influence operations, and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), particularly in relation to global issues such as war, migration, climate change, and democratic participation.

Through a high-level international seminar, Mondo situates media literacy within the broader framework of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and democratic citizenship, emphasising that countering disinformation requires not only technical fact-checking skills, but also critical understanding of media systems, power relations, values, and ethical responsibility. The seminar within the project “MediaACT: Media Awareness & Critical Thinking” supports educators in navigating the contemporary “post-truth” information environment and strengthens their role as key actors in fostering resilient, informed, and participatory democratic societies.
