PROJECTS

Science and technology education for girls in rural Kenya

Project period: March 2026 – February 2027

Project donor: The Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV)

Project partners: TalTech (Estonia), CIVS (Kenya)

Project budget: 94 909 €

Mondo supports girls in rural Kenya in accessing technology education in order to expand their future career opportunities and increase their competitiveness in the labour market.

Kenya faces several challenges related to women’s opportunities in both the labour market and education. Traditional gender roles often limit girls’ access to quality education and steer women toward lower-paying sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and services. Their opportunities to enter higher-paying jobs in technology and engineering are restricted by both social expectations and unequal access to education. If girls had the opportunity to acquire skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) from an early age, their career prospects would broaden and their competitiveness in the labour market would increase.

With the project “Empowering girls through the science education program developed by TalTech in rural Kenya” Mondo continues its work in this field in Kisumu. In collaboration with TalTech and CIVS, Mondo will implement teacher training in six schools based on a customized curriculum developed by TalTech. This training will be followed by a structured mentorship program and will also involve community members, parents and teaching assistants, with a total of 60 science education facilitators trained.

At the heart of the project is the empowerment of 300 girls by enhancing their self-confidence and expanding their educational and career choices. Through project activities, social norms that often limit girls’ participation in digital and technological fields will be challenged and reduced. By actively involving the wider community, the project also raises awareness of the value of girls in STEM fields and supports their confidence to independently choose their educational paths.
