Mondo opened a shelter for IDPs in Ukraine

The shelter opened on Thursday in the Khmelnytskyi region offers people who have been forced to leave their homes, a safe place to stay and mental health support.

“There is a large number of internally displaced people in Ukraine who do not have a safe place to live today, and although it is currently summer, winter is approaching. Shelters are crucial for people to escape the cold and have a warm and safe place to plan their next steps,” said Erika Cherkashina, head of humanitarian aid for Ukraine at Mondo. For the year 2023 the Shelter Cluster in Ukraine set a target to reach 207,708 internally displaced people (IDPs) who are in the acute need of housing, yet so far – 8 months in – only 38% of the anticipated people have been reached.

The new shelter is located in the former polyclinic in the village of Solobkivts in the Khmelnytskyi region and accommodates up to 35 IDPs. In addition to ten bedrooms, the building has a kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms. The building has been completely renovated.

The rooms were set up in cooperation between Mondo and the local partner charity fund “Angels of Salvation” with the support of donations from the people of Estonia. The shelter will be operated by the government of Hirske City – an occupied city located in Luhansk oblast.

“Estonian people have supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war when Mondo started working in the Luhansk region in 2014. We have a lot of warm memories of this region and it is special to support the people there again in these difficult circumstances,” said Mariia Guliaieva, head of Mondo’s office in Ukraine.

Mondo started working in eastern Ukraine and has expanded its activities across Ukraine since 2022, when the full-scale war started, focusing on quality education, mental health support and reconstruction. Read more about Mondo’s activities in Ukraine and follow on social media.
