Mondo’s Activities in Afghanistan

Mondo has been working in Afghanistan since 2008, when the first health experts were deployed in order to help build a medical system for the area of Helmand province. Since 2011, Mondo supports the education of girls in rural areas, women’s reproductive health and improved opportunities on the labor market for Afghan women.

  • Since 2012, Mondo offers aid to Fatima Zahra girls school of 260 students in Jalalabad. The students are orphans, have special needs or come from families affected by the war.  Mondo covers the teachers’ salaries as well as the expenses of the study materials of the students. Mondo’s support also helped install solar panels for the school and build two new classrooms for conducting science lessons.
  • Since 2014, Mondo has collaborated with Tallinn Health Care College to offer professional support to medical schools who teach midwifery. The support includes updates to the curricula, provision of modern study materials and additional training. The training courses take 7-8 months and are held with the help of Moodle and Skype. Every year, we provide training to around 30 local midwives, who give healthcare lectures to 600-700 girls in local schools in addition to their daily jobs. In Andkhoy centre in Faryabi province, there is also a free advice helpline for women. According to estimates, the additional training impacts 50 000 women who need childbirth assistance in Northern and Eastern Afghanistan.
  • In collaboration with Estonian Rescue Board and EUPOL, Mondo has helped train 36 Afghan rescue workers to skilfully use the firetrucks provided for them by the US air forces. The local rescue workers working on the 54 fire trucks were also trained as instructors, which helps increase the rescue capacity around Afghanistan.
  • With support from Mondo, over 100 outside toilets were established around the rural schools and village centers around northern Afghanistan in order to raise awareness around healthcare and hygiene.
  • 100 women from Fāryāb province have taken part in a thorough 6-month IT training, allowing them to get jobs in local businesses and schools and make money independently.
  • 30 rural school teachers in Herat province have taken a computer training course and 33 schools have received computers, which altogether improves the computer education given to 13 000 girls. The classes have access to the internet and with support from Estonians, the schools have also hired a teacher and an assisting teacher.
  • In Sar-e Pol province, 100 women have completed a 6 month IT training course and 20 women from areas all around Sar-e Pol also completed a month-long computer course.
